Cake Catastrophe!

So.

It was Scotty-Boy's 37th birthday yesterday (that is SO old (but only until I turn 37!))

Being the good wife that I am...

(NOT)

I decided to make his favorite cake.

(According to the BOX.)

I followed every instruction EXACTLY (I promise with my whole heart)...

And this is what it looked like in my oven:
And that is why I don't even TRY to be a good wife.

I AM NOT MEANT TO BAKE, COOK, or even be IN THE KITCHEN.

(I followed EVERY instruction.)

((And it was a BOX cake.))

WHY ME?

Fortunately I was able to trim (with my kitchen scissors) the cake and make it somewhat presentable. (Somewhat.) Then before we even lit the candles or sang "Happy Birthday," Scott took a big ol' chunk out with his hands. He's 37 people - going on TWO.
Anywho...it tasted good. So I guess it was worth it even if I did have a HUGE mess in my oven and had to clean it.

And just when you think that would be all to this blog post, it didn't end there...

Nope.

You see, Nathan wanted me to get the "magic" candles that keep lighting up even when you blow them out. (And if Nathan says, I do.)  So I surprised them both with these candles and they didN'T work.

Nope.

Never re-lit.

UNTIL Nathan pulled them out, set them on a napkin, and a FEW MINUTES later, one was setting the napkin on fire.

I kid you not.

VERY luckily, I grabbed it just in time before it put a hole in our counter tops.

I don't recommend these candles.

Or the boxed angel food cake mixes.

I highly recommend store bought cakes and closed kitchens in my house.

At least you tried! And, I am glad you got the candle out in time!

Did you mix it in a glass bowl or a plastic one? I know you said you followed all the instructions but that has always been one I wanted to break ;) just wondering if maybe that would be the outcome. hehe

too funny! my mom once made an angel food cake, put it in the oven, completely forgot about it, later set the oven to clean.....and yep! she didn't notice until it was stinkin' up the whole house, very overdone, and then it was stuck in there with the door locked until the oven cooled down. she saved it for her sisters 40th bday! she really is a good cook though!
your cake looked yum! i would have ate it!
Happy Birthday Scott! 37 is pretty old!

As much as I wish I could be Martha Stewart... unfortunately my baking efforts turn out exactly like that. In my old age (36!) I'm learning that there's a reason for stores that sell that stuff!!

Don't you hate that! We had a similar disaster with a rainbow cake. It still turned out great and I' sure it was delicious, regardless of how that oven might look. : )

That is totally, completely hilarious!!! Reminds me of the time my meatloaf caught fire in the oven!!! :) Thanks for the laugh; I'm a first time visitor, and I love your site!

(found you on Blogher, by the way, in case you were wondering if I'm a creepy stalker person... which I'm not... please ignore that person taking picture of your house from down the street. That's NOT me. ;)
