I could not wait to copy her gift idea for my Wednesday School students.
As soon as I saw this idea, I was out the door to get my supplies.
I could NOT wait to get started.
I warmed up a bag of chocolate chips in the microwave.
(Amazingly, I did NOT burn them.)
I started dipping but decided that the chocolate needed to be more "runny."
So I added milk.
BAD idea.
The chocolate turned ROCK hard.
ROCK. HARD.
Like... can't even get it out of the bowl... had to let it soak with DAWN for two days... almost threw the bowl away... ROCK HARD.
While VERY frustrated (and maybe mumbling a few choice words), I was determined to not be beat.
The next day I bought more chocolate chips.
And then I saw these -- and thought they would work great too! (How festive!) I decided to do some of each...I did the chocolate ones first.
MANY burned fingers later... they are done. They don't look pretty but they WILL work.
Next I melted the swirled ones.
Do you know what this mixed bag of red, green, and white do when cooked together?
They turn PUKE or DIARRHEA green.
NASTY!
Those went right in the disposal.
Chocolate it is.
And... next year... I'll stick to staying OUT of the kitchen.

LOVE IT!!Maybe next year you could pay the girl to make the coated marshmallows for you :)
Seriously? I **SNORTED** while reading this I laughed so dang hard.
I am so with you Girl!
...and every year...EVERY year...my husband says, "So, you and the kids are making all the finger foods, dips and cookies for me to put out in the breakrooms right?"
After he wakes up and pulls himself up, he says, "Oh. I guess not this year..."
Too Funny!
I just saw a thing that you put into cake decorating bags, the ice cream cone hot cocoa mix/marshmallo/chocolate chips thing...but even then it's too much work! LOL
I hope you have a great Christmas!
Ha haaa!
Jen, you are funny. I honestly never knew that chocolate would go so horribly wrong when mixed with milk!!
I really love that gift idea, though. Filing it away in the ol' hard drive for next year :)
xoxox,
mvz
that looks like a great idea. I must have missed it on Megs blog. I would have done the same thing as you...........just jumped right in.
yes, I do think we mom's of only children are busier. :)
I am dipping pretzels today.....a fondue pot works great.
This cracks me up! Last year I thought I would be very smart and add some peppermint schnapps to my peppermint bark. Bad idea. The chocolate got all scary and gloopy. Then I thought I would try a new batch and add peppermint extract. Same problem. I think the lesson here is that we should not be adding things to chocolate. :) You are not alone in learning this! Merry Christmas!

I'm here visiting from Today's Creative Blog & looking forward to browsing...
If you ever decide you want to try again with the dipping chocolate, here's the trick: only add shortening or oil to thin it. Even butter will make it set up. :)
I worked in a bakery for years and there's a few tips that might help you. One, use dipping chocolate and not chocolate chips. Two, check out Guittard's Melt N Mold chocolates (go online to http://www.anoccasionalchocolate.com/ and buy from there). Three, there is a product called Paramount Crystals and are sold by a company called Country Kitchen (http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/mini.aspx?T=2&ShopId=39&CatId=593&SubCatId=794)
Good luck! :) Once you have the right supplies, chocolate making is easy!
I just found you from TCB...enjoyed reading through your blog. I think I went back 6 or 7 pages! I'll be back for sure!
you can also add 2 tbsp of cooking oil to the chocolate chips when melting them in the microwave. Only turn on for 30 seconds at a time and then stir, and microwave again to repeat process until all is melted. I use toothpicks or skewers to dip and then place on wax paper
Hi, I popped over from TCB and I just love your craftiness, not to mention your Christmas Spirit. I hope the new year brings wonderful things for you and your family and your husband's career.
from sunny Oman, Clo
Can I just say you are my new favorite blog girl?...I LOVE your use of ribbon, your cute kid and you're a former MOPS mom...LOVED reading-I'll be back :)
Hey~ Here is another visitor from TCB! I love you already! Your blog is precious and I love your style and cute family. I have skimmed all of your posts back to the beginning. I will be back for many more visits and will also be praying for you and the baby business. Cute coco bags by the way!
Love this!
I found you through another blog and I've been having the best time going through your site!
Love your pups! I've replaced all my grown kids with pups, we have 4!
Great blog!
I've done the same thing with chocolate!
Next year do a bag of kettle corn or popcorn with the cocoa and candy cane. No cooking required!
oh this is terrible!
i am so sorry.
i hate that this happened. it's a challenge working with melting things....i have ruined MANY pots of chocolate of the years. and nearly ruined this one that day because i turned away for a moment!
this is why i pay for my gingerbread house. :)
the pressure to do it myself is too much.
glad you made it through. and good for you for trying twice! go girl.
i came over from TCB today to congratulate you.
congrats!!
Thank you ALL so much for the advice on cooking with chocolate! Hopefully I'll never EVER have that problem again! (Yet, somehow... problems in the kitchen seem to FIND me... but let's think positive, shall we?!)
Lots of Smiles!
Jen
I just found your blog and am enjoying it, thank you. I, too, saw the marshmallow post and said . "Ooh, I can do that". I did, but the marshmallows just didn't look great. I also had a lot of melted chocolate left. I rummaged in my cabinets and found pretzel rods, but they were stale. I then tried pretzel nuggets dipped halfway in the chocolate and then sprinkles. They took about an hour to harden, but when I put about ten of them in a small cellophane-ish bag, they looked wonderful! And, they tasted really good!
