Milestone

Nathan hates to read.

HATES.

With a passion.

It's a chore every single night to make him read.

(We've read to him every single night since the day he was born.  As he was premature, in the hospital, we read to him.)

He is, however, a VERY good speller.  And, I think, he reads very well... WHEN he does read.

For the past couple of years, we've read chapter books to him.  We have lots of favorites. He has started several chapter books on his own but has never finished one by himself until this past week.

Finally!

He read 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' from start to finish.  He even read longer on some nights to get it finished before he had to return it to the library.

Yahoo!

Now he has started book 2.

Does anyone know anything about these books?  I read a little of one and didn't really care for it.  Are they appropriate for an eight year old?  I sure hope so... I don't think I could tell him not to read it now even if I wanted to.  He'd probably never pick up a book again!

Good question! Noah has read 3 of them (LOVES them - I think there's 5 or so) and I guess I haven't looked too closely at them - maybe I'd better do that!! :( I've been asleep at the switch, I guess!

Just went to www.commonsensemedia.org and read the reviews - you might want to do that . . .

My daughter loves these books! She doesn't seem to be the voracious reader I was as a kid, so I let her read things that some parents might not agree with. To me, any age appropriate reading is a plus.

I remember having a discussion with another Mom about Junie B. Jones books. She didn't want those books in her house because Junie was so sassy. Which I agree with, but when I used to read those books to the Noodle we'd *laugh* about how sassy she was and talk about how we couldn't believe she got away with the stuff she did! Talking about it like that, we didn't have any problems with rub-off sassiness.

Plus, I usually read stuff before I let her read it. And I'm a very liberal person.

Have you read the books yet? We think think they're hilarious and bought them all for Noodle!

QB, also 8, loves to read. He received one of the Wimpy Kids books for Christmas and quickly decided he didn't like them.

He does LOVE the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. They're fiction based on the adventures Jack and Annie take to historical events, far away places and different centuries. Random House started to release Research Guides that correspond to the fictional book that have more facts and information about the settings. They are a pretty quick read and pique QB's interest in other cultures, etc.

You should check 'em out.

how funny...i just read the second one this past week....sad isn't it!! ryan devoured each one of them as soon as he got them in his hands, loving every second of it. he even read one of them twice. he thought they were histerical. he would lay on the counch in the living room reading and randomly laugh out loud. i too questioned whether or not they were appropriate after looking at a few of the things he was laughing about. after reading it, i'm still a little on the fence. the boy in the book is quite a bit older than our boys, so his behaviour is also quite a bit different, although probably still not acceptable in our own homes. the moms isn't as involved as our cuties are used to either! all in all they did end up having a message (kind-of) at the end, and I too kind-of feel like if they are happy to read, what's a mom to do! ryan read them at the beginning of the school year and I haven't noticed any "bad behavior" because of them :) Ryan is loving Percy Jackson and the Olympians right now. Seriously can not put them down. He also really likes Stink and liked The Chronicles of Narnia. Maybe Nathan would like those too! Yea Nathan for reading!!

Okay - here is what I think - do you want to know - going to get my opinion anyway...

Matthew has read the first one - Trent questioned it - I read the reviews - said for older kids?? He really wants the 2nd book and wants to see the movie??

So, what do I think?? While I wish that he would read a wholesome book that isn't full of crude jokes and stupidity - he really likes them. Will I get him the 2nd book?? I don't know??

Is this going to get any easier when they get older?? Absolutely NOT!! Are we going to need lots of HELP?? YES!!

Did I help you out?? Not really.
